Stop Food Waste – Eat More Fish

by | Apr 24, 2019 | Features, Fish

Something we get asked a lot about is how to store your fish – how long will it keep in the fridge? When do I put it in the freezer?

Making sure you store your seafood correctly massively helps in reducing food waste. 33% of all food produced globally is lost or wasted every year (stopfoodwasteday.com) and in the UK, £810 worth of food is thrown away by the average UK family per year (wrap.org.uk).

So, on Stop Food Waste Day, we wanted to share a few tips on how to store, plan for, and use your Ish Fish.

Storing your fish

As soon as you get your Ish Fish delivery, put your fish into the fridge or freezer – the sooner, the better. If you’ll be eating your fish within two days of the delivery, keep it in the fridge. However, if you have any other fish for later on in the week, or in the near future if you’re bulk buying, put it straight into the freezer. With Ish Fish, every portion, fillet, or side is vacuum-packed, which removes as much air as possible to keep the fish’s quality, and these can be placed straight into fridge or freezer – no messing.

Plan your meals

With a weekly meal plan, you’ll know exactly what you’ll be eating for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, so you can buy only the food you need for the week, minimising wasted produce as much as possible. With Ish Fish, you know what you’ll be getting in your Box, so it’s easy to incorporate your fish into your meal plan.

Use those leftovers

When stored correctly, leftover fish can be a quick, easy and tasty way to add flavour and protein to your meals. You can add leftover salmon and tuna to pasta, salad, and even wraps (try this recipe with leftover tuna), and we love flaked smoked haddock in a kedgeree. The ultimate leftover recipe is fast fishcakes – just make sure your food is hot and thoroughly cooked through.
