Ish Fish Guide to Meal Times in the School Summer Holidays

It’s Summer 2018. It feels like we’ve had 19,567 days of genuine sun-filled summertime. We’re still reeling from the World Cup (#footballscominghome2022 ⚽🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🙌). And now, things are about to get that bit more mental as the kids start their school summer holidays.

It can be a hectic time, planning holidays and days out, keeping the kids entertained whilst managing work and making time for yourself. A good, nutritious meal plan will keep you fuelled for whatever the school holidays throw at you, but we know that sometimes it can be the first thing that goes out the window.

We get it. You’re out and about having a good time, and think “F**k it! I can’t be bothered to go to the shop now. I don’t know what I want to eat. Let’s grab something on the way home.” You’re taking advantage of all the good vibes of summer and enjoying your time with the family.

However, it’s been well reported that busy lives can have a negative impact on your diet plans. Chances are you reach for quick-fix meals and sugary snacks, which can upset sleep and energy levels – not ideal.

So, we’ve put together the Ish Fish Guide to meal times in the school summer holidays.

Get prepping

If you have the chance to spend a few minutes planning out your meals for the next few days, do it. You’ll know exactly what’s on the home menu, know what ingredients you need to get in, and save a few pennies. We do love a good batch cooking session, too.

Good food

Fill your meal plans with fresh, nutrient-rich food that not only tastes amazing but keeps you going throughout the day. Slow-releasing energy from a hearty fibrous breakfast, plenty of vitamins, minerals, and water to make up for the increase in sweating and keep you hydrated, and a whole lot of quality protein.

Grill on the BBQ

There’s nothing like the sizzle of a fresh fillet of salmon hitting the hot grill of the barbeque, the skin going super crispy while the fish begins to flake, soaking up that amazing smoky flavour from the hot coals 👌. Grill fillets, whole fish stuffed with herbs and spices, wrap them water-soaked newspaper or cook as a kebab… why wouldn’t you have fish on the barbie?

Eat outside

Sitting out in the beautiful sunshine is one of our favourite ways to spend mealtimes with the family. Even if it’s a quick picnic in the back garden using simple but tasty ingredients, the kids love it. Nothing says summer like eating alfresco.

Make the most of it

This goes without saying! Plan and prep your meals like you would any other parts of the day, and enjoy your time with the family.
